Storyboard: Maya wakes up late in her flat. She eats a late breakfast and checks her phone to see the time in Mexico. It is still night there, so she has a few hours to prepare for the family call.
Es ist Sonntag.	It is Sunday.
Ich wache spät auf.	I wake up late.
Meine Wohnung ist ruhig.	My flat is quiet.
Ich mache mein Frühstück.	I make my breakfast.
Der Kaffee ist heiß.	The coffee is hot.
Da ist auch ein Brötchen.	There is also a bread roll.

Storyboard: Maya puts on her jacket and steps out into the January air. Because it is Sunday, the ordinary shops and supermarkets are shut. She walks down the street to a Späti to buy a small German treat to show her family later.
Heute ist Sonntag.	Today is Sunday.
Ich möchte eine deutsche Süßigkeit kaufen.	I want to buy a German sweet.
Sie ist für den Videoanruf.	It is for the video call.
Ich nehme meinen Rucksack.	I take my backpack.
Dann ziehe ich meine Jacke an.	Then I put on my jacket.
Ich gehe aus der Wohnung.	I go out of the flat.
Es ist Januar.	It is January.
Die Luft draußen ist sehr kalt.	The air outside is very cold.
Die Straße ist heute sehr ruhig.	The street is very quiet today.

Storyboard: Inside the Späti, Maya picks out a bar of German chocolate. She goes to the counter, pays a few Euro, and turns to leave. She leaves her backpack on the counter. The cashier calls after her and holds it up; she thanks him, takes it and heads home.
Ich bin im Späti.	I am in the Späti.
Ich suche eine deutsche Schokolade für meine Familie.	I am looking for a German chocolate for my family.
Hier ist eine Tafel Schokolade.	Here is a bar of chocolate.
Ich gehe zur Kasse.	I go to the till.
Ich lege meinen Rucksack auf die Theke.	I put my backpack on the counter.
Der Verkäufer sagt: „Das macht drei Euro, bitte.“	The cashier says, "That is three euros, please."
Ich bezahle drei Euro.	I pay three euros.
Ich nehme die Schokolade und gehe zur Tür.	I take the chocolate and go to the door.
Jemand ruft: „Entschuldigung!“	Someone calls, "Excuse me!"
Wer ruft?	Who is calling?
Ich bleibe stehen und schaue zurück.	I stop and look back.
Der Verkäufer hält meinen Rucksack hoch.	The cashier holds up my backpack.
Er fragt: „Ist das Ihr Rucksack?“	He asks, "Is that your backpack?"
Ich bin überrascht.	I am surprised.
Ich sage: „Oh, ja!“	I say, "Oh, yes!"
„Das ist mein Rucksack.“	"That is my backpack."
Ich gehe zurück und nehme den Rucksack.	I go back and take the backpack.
Ich sage: „Vielen Dank!“	I say, "Thank you very much!"
Er lächelt und sagt: „Gern geschehen.“	He smiles and says, "You are welcome."
Ich verlasse den Späti.	I leave the Späti.
Jetzt gehe ich nach Hause.	Now I am heading home.

Storyboard: Back in the flat, the time for the call approaches. Maya sits at her table, opens her laptop, and sets the bar of chocolate next to it. She checks her camera and initiates the video call.
Ich bin wieder in der Wohnung.	I am back in the flat.
Es ist Nachmittag in Berlin.	It is afternoon in Berlin.
In Mexiko ist es jetzt Morgen.	In Mexico, it is morning now.
Mein Tisch ist klein.	My table is small.
Ich sitze am Tisch und öffne den Laptop.	I sit at the table and open the laptop.
Mein Laptop ist bereit.	My laptop is ready.
Ich lege die Schokolade auf den Tisch.	I lay the chocolate on the table.
Sie liegt jetzt neben dem Laptop.	It lies next to the laptop now.
Das ist eine Überraschung.	That is a surprise.
Ich teste die Kamera.	I test the camera.
Das Bild ist gut.	The picture is good.
Mein Zimmer ist hell.	My room is bright.

Ich starte den Videoanruf.	I start the video call.

Storyboard: The screen lights up and connects to Mexico, where it is morning. Her mother and father appear and greet her warmly. Maya turns the laptop to show them her table, her chair and her window, and they ask how she is settling in.
Der Bildschirm wird hell.	The screen lights up.
Ich sehe meine Eltern.	I see my parents.
Meine Mutter winkt fröhlich.	My mother waves happily.
„Guten Morgen, Maya!“, sagt sie.	"Good morning, Maya!" she says.
Mein Vater lächelt auch.	My father smiles too.
„Hallo Mama, hallo Papa“, sage ich.	"Hello Mom, hello Dad," I say.
„Wie ist deine Wohnung?“, fragt meine Mutter.	"How is your flat?" my mother asks.
Ich drehe den Laptop.	I turn the laptop.
Ich zeige mein Zimmer.	I show my room.
„Das ist mein Tisch“, sage ich.	"That is my table," I say.
„Und hier ist ein Stuhl.“	"And here is a chair."
Ich zeige auch mein Fenster.	I also show my window.
Das Wetter in Berlin ist kalt.	The weather in Berlin is cold.
Aber meine Wohnung ist sehr warm.	But my flat is very warm.
Mein Vater nickt.	My father nods.
„Bist du glücklich dort?“, fragt er.	"Are you happy there?" he asks.
„Ja, alles ist gut“, antworte ich.	"Yes, everything is good," I answer.

Storyboard: A blurry figure walks behind her parents in the background. Maya asks who it is. It is her older brother, Diego. He leans in to say good morning, and moments later, her younger sister, Sofia, joins the frame too.
Ich schaue auf den Laptop.	I look at the laptop.
Meine Mutter und mein Vater lächeln.	My mother and my father smile.
Aber da ist eine Person im Hintergrund.	But there is a person in the background.
Das Bild ist unscharf.	The picture is blurry.
Ich frage: „Wer ist das?“	I ask, "Who is that?"
Meine Mutter dreht sich um.	My mother turns around.
Die Person kommt näher.	The person comes closer.
Es ist ein Mann.	It is a man.
„Guten Morgen, Maya!“, sagt der Mann.	"Good morning, Maya!" says the man.
Es ist mein Bruder Diego.	It is my brother Diego.
„Hallo Diego!“, sage ich.	"Hello Diego!" I say.
Dann sehe ich noch eine Person.	Then I see another person.
Ein Mädchen kommt ins Bild.	A girl comes into the picture.
Es ist meine Schwester.	It is my sister.
„Hallo Sofia!“, rufe ich.	"Hello Sofia!" I call out.
Sofia winkt und lächelt.	Sofia waves and smiles.
Meine Familie ist zusammen.	My family is together.
Ich freue mich sehr.	I am very happy.

Storyboard: A loud bark interrupts the conversation. Her parents lift Lola, the family dog, up to the camera. Maya laughs and talks to the dog, then asks who is walking Lola now that she is away.
Plötzlich bellt ein Hund laut.	Suddenly, a dog barks loudly.
Meine Familie lacht.	My family laughs.
Mein Vater hebt Lola hoch.	My father lifts Lola up.
Er hält Lola direkt vor die Kamera.	He holds Lola right in front of the camera.
Ich lache auch.	I laugh too.
„Hallo Lola!“, rufe ich.	"Hello Lola!" I call.
Lola schaut in den Laptop.	Lola looks into the laptop.
Sie ist ein sehr braver Hund.	She is a very good dog.
„Wer ist ein braver Hund?“, frage ich.	"Who is a good dog?" I ask.
Lola bellt noch einmal.	Lola barks once more.
Meine Schwester Sofia streichelt sie.	My sister Sofia pets her.
„Wer geht jetzt mit Lola spazieren?“, frage ich meine Familie.	"Who is walking Lola now?" I ask my family.
Normalerweise ist das meine Aufgabe.	Normally, that is my job.
„Dein Bruder geht jeden Tag mit ihr spazieren“, sagt meine Mutter.	"Your brother walks her every day," my mother says.
Mein Bruder Diego nickt stolz.	My brother Diego nods proudly.
„Ja, Lola und ich sind ein gutes Team“, sagt er.	"Yes, Lola and I are a good team," he says.
Das freut mich sehr.	I am very glad about that.
Ich vermisse Lola sehr.	I miss Lola a lot.
the chocolate reveal
Storyboard: Maya holds up the chocolate she bought at the Späti to the camera. She explains that it is a German brand. Her family asks whether she has a big supermarket nearby, and she describes the little kiosk around the corner instead.
Jetzt zeige ich meine Schokolade.	Now I show my chocolate.
Ich halte die Schokolade in die Kamera.	I hold the chocolate up to the camera.
"Schaut mal", sage ich.	"Look," I say.
"Das ist eine deutsche Marke."	"This is a German brand."
Meine Mutter fragt: "Ist ein großer Supermarkt in der Nähe?"	My mother asks: "Is a big supermarket nearby?"
"Nein", sage ich.	"No," I say.
"Mein Supermarkt ist heute zu."	"My supermarket is closed today."
"Es ist Sonntag."	"It is Sunday."
Mein Bruder Diego fragt: "Wer verkauft am Sonntag Schokolade?"	My brother Diego asks: "Who sells chocolate on a Sunday?"
Ich lache.	I laugh.
"Ein Späti", antworte ich.	"A Späti," I answer.
Diego fragt: "Was ist ein Späti?"	Diego asks: "What is a Späti?"
"Das ist ein kleiner Kiosk", erkläre ich.	"It is a small kiosk," I explain.
"Er ist direkt um die Ecke."	"It is right around the corner."
"Mein Späti hat alles."	"My Späti has everything."
Meine Schwester Sofia lächelt.	My sister Sofia smiles.
"Guten Appetit", sagt mein Vater.	"Enjoy," says my father.
goodbye and walk
Storyboard: They say their goodbyes and Maya closes her laptop. She puts her jacket back on and walks a while along her street, past the shut shops, before she goes back up.
„Tschüss, Mama!“	"Bye, Mom!"
„Tschüss, Papa!“, sage ich.	"Bye, Dad!" I say.
„Bis bald, Maya!“, sagt meine Familie.	"See you soon, Maya!" says my family.
Ich mache den Laptop zu.	I close the laptop.
Es ist leise in der Wohnung.	It is quiet in the flat.
Ich habe ein bisschen Heimweh.	I am a little homesick.
Ich brauche frische Luft.	I need fresh air.
Ich ziehe meine Jacke an und gehe nach draußen.	I put on my jacket and go outside.
Es ist Januar und sehr kalt.	It is January and very cold.
