Week 4: Moving into the new flat

Storyboard: Maya packs her last few belongings in her temporary room. She places her laptop carefully into her backpack and zips it up. She pulls her suitcase out into the hallway, ready for the short journey through the building to her permanent home.
Heute ist mein Umzugstag.	Today is my moving day.
Das Zimmer ist fast leer.	The room is almost empty.
Mein Koffer steht unter dem Fenster.	My suitcase stands under the window.
Er ist groß und schwer.	It is big and heavy.
Mein Laptop liegt auf dem Bett.	My laptop lies on the bed.
Ich packe ihn vorsichtig in den Rucksack.	I pack it carefully into the backpack.
Mein Pullover liegt neben dem Laptop.	My sweater lies next to the laptop.
Ich packe den Pullover auch ein.	I pack the sweater too.
Dann mache ich den Rucksack zu.	Then I close the backpack.

Storyboard: Maya drags the suitcase along the corridor. Hearing the noise, her neighbor Sabine Krüger opens her door. Frau Krüger takes the other end and helps her carry it to the door of the new flat.
Ich bin jetzt im Flur.	I am now in the corridor.
Mein Koffer steht auf dem Boden.	My suitcase is standing on the floor.
Er ist sehr schwer.	It is very heavy.
Ich ziehe den Koffer.	I pull the suitcase.
Das ist ziemlich laut.	That is quite loud.
Da geht eine Tür auf.	Then a door opens.
Frau Krüger steht in der Tür.	Frau Krüger stands in the doorway.
Ihr kleiner Hund Bruno steht neben der Tür.	Her small dog Bruno is standing next to the door.
Sie lächelt freundlich.	She smiles kindly.
"Brauchen Sie Hilfe, Frau Flores?", fragt Frau Krüger.	"Do you need help, Frau Flores?" asks Frau Krüger.
"Ja, bitte", sage ich.	"Yes, please," I say.
Frau Krüger hilft mir sofort.	Frau Krüger helps me immediately.
Sie nimmt die andere Seite.	She takes the other side.
Wir tragen den Koffer zusammen.	We carry the suitcase together.
Jetzt stehen wir vor meiner neuen Tür.	Now we are standing in front of my new door.
Ein kleines Schild hängt an der Tür.	A small sign is hanging on the door.
Der Koffer steht sicher auf dem Boden.	The suitcase is standing safely on the floor.
Eine Matte liegt unter dem Koffer.	A mat is lying under the suitcase.
"Vielen Dank, Frau Krüger", sage ich.	"Thank you very much, Frau Krüger," I say.
"Gern geschehen", sagt sie.	"You're welcome," she says.
opening the door
Storyboard: Maya turns the key and unlocks the door to her new home—the flat. She steps inside and looks up at the high ceilings and the windows onto the courtyard. Frau Krüger wishes her a successful move and returns to her own flat, leaving Maya to settle in.

Sie lächelt freundlich.	She smiles kindly.
„Vielen Dank für die Hilfe, Frau Krüger“, antworte ich.	"Thank you very much for the help, Frau Krüger," I answer.
Sie geht zu ihrer Wohnung zurück.	She goes back to her flat.
Ich stehe allein in der Wohnung.	I stand alone in the flat.
Mein Rucksack liegt noch draußen auf dem Koffer.	My backpack is still lying outside on the suitcase.
Ich bin endlich in meinem echten Zuhause.	I am finally in my real home.
hallway inventory
Storyboard: Maya pulls the suitcase inside and closes the door. She takes stock of the small furnished hallway, noting where things stand and hang. A mirror hangs next to the door, and a shoe rack stands under the coat hooks.
Ich ziehe meinen Koffer in den Flur.	I pull my suitcase into the hallway.
Ich schließe die Tür.	I close the door.

Storyboard: Maya tackles her clothes in the small bedroom. After some organizing, her suitcase lies open on the bed, her shirts hang in the wardrobe, and her shoes stand in a row under the bed.
Ich gehe in das Schlafzimmer.	I go into the bedroom.
Ein Schrank steht neben dem Bett.	A wardrobe stands next to the bed.
Ich lege meinen Koffer auf das Bett.	I put my suitcase on the bed.

Storyboard: Maya wants to play some music while she works, but her phone has a low battery. She searches for her charger, finally finding it lying hidden in her backpack, tucked under a thick winter sweater.
Ich brauche Musik für die Arbeit.	I need music for work.
Ich nehme mein Handy.	I take my phone.
Aber der Akku ist fast leer.	But the battery is almost empty.
Ich brauche mein Ladekabel.	I need my charging cable.
Wo ist das Ladekabel?	Where is the charging cable?
Es liegt nicht auf dem Tisch.	It is not lying on the table.
Es liegt auch nicht neben dem Laptop.	It is also not lying next to the laptop.
Ich suche im Schlafzimmer.	I search in the bedroom.

coffee break
Storyboard: Needing a quick rest, Maya takes a break in her new kitchen. She takes the thermos she filled that morning, pours a cup of coffee and stands at the window looking down into the courtyard.
Ich bin müde vom Umzug.	I am tired from the move.
Ich brauche eine kurze Pause.	I need a short break.
Ich gehe in meine neue Küche.	I go into my new kitchen.
Meine Thermoskanne steht schon auf dem Küchentisch.	My thermos is already standing on the kitchen table.
Der Kaffee darin ist von heute Morgen.	The coffee in it is from this morning.
Neben der Thermoskanne steht eine Tasse.	Next to the thermos stands a cup.
Ich schenke den Kaffee ein.	I pour the coffee.
Er ist zum Glück noch warm.	Fortunately, it is still warm.
Ich nehme die Tasse in die Hand.	I take the cup in my hand.
Ich stehe am Fenster.	I stand at the window.
Ein Handtuch hängt neben dem Fenster.	A towel is hanging next to the window.
Ich schaue in den Innenhof.	I look into the courtyard.
Unten im Innenhof stehen viele Fahrräder.	Down in the courtyard stand many bicycles.
Neben den Fahrrädern steht ein Baum.	Next to the bicycles stands a tree.

housewarming plant
Storyboard: A polite knock interrupts the quiet. Frau Krüger stands at the door with a potted plant as a housewarming gift. Maya thanks her, and they put the plant on the windowsill.
Ich stehe in der Küche.	I stand in the kitchen.
Es ist sehr ruhig in der neuen Wohnung.	It is very quiet in the new flat.
Plötzlich klopft es an der Tür.	Suddenly, there is a knock at the door.
Ich gehe in den Flur und öffne die Tür.	I go into the hallway and open the door.
Meine Nachbarin, Frau Krüger, steht vor der Tür.	My neighbor, Frau Krüger, stands in front of the door.
Sie hat eine kleine Pflanze in der Hand.	She has a small plant in her hand.
„Ein Geschenk für die neue Wohnung, Frau Flores“, sagt sie.	"A gift for the new flat, Frau Flores," she says.
„Vielen Dank, Frau Krüger!“	"Thank you very much, Frau Krüger!"
„Kommen Sie doch herein“, sage ich.	"Please come in," I say.
Wir gehen in das Wohnzimmer.	We go into the living room.
Frau Krüger schaut sich um.	Frau Krüger looks around.

Jetzt steht die Pflanze auf dem Fensterbrett.	Now the plant stands on the windowsill.
Sie steht genau neben dem Laptop.	It stands exactly next to the laptop.
„Das sieht sehr gemütlich aus“, sagt Frau Krüger.	"That looks very cozy," says Frau Krüger.
„Ja, ich fühle mich hier wirklich wohl“, antworte ich.	"Yes, I really feel comfortable here," I answer.
