Week 14: Maya crosses the city by train

Storyboard: Maya comes out of the office after work and walks to the station. Today she has an errand at a small coffee roaster by the river, right across the city. The route app shows her the way: first with the U-Bahn, then she must change onto the S-Bahn. The shop closes at six, so she must hurry.
Meine Arbeit ist für heute zu Ende.	My work is finished for today.
Ich sage Jonas tschüss und gehe nach draußen.	I say goodbye to Jonas and go outside.
Die Luft ist mild und es ist noch hell.	The air is mild and it is still light.
Heute fahre ich nicht direkt nach Hause.	Today I am not travelling straight home.
Ich brauche guten Kaffee.	I need good coffee.
Es gibt eine kleine Kaffeerösterei am Fluss.	There is a small coffee roaster by the river.
Sie ist ganz auf der anderen Seite der Stadt.	It is right on the other side of the city.
Ich schaue auf mein Handy.	I look at my phone.
Die App zeigt mir den besten Weg.	The app shows me the best way.
Zuerst muss ich mit der U-Bahn fahren.	First I must travel with the U-Bahn.
Dann muss ich umsteigen.	Then I must change trains.
Die zweite Fahrt ist mit der S-Bahn.	The second journey is with the S-Bahn.
Das Geschäft schließt schon um sechs.	The shop already closes at six.
Jetzt ist es Viertel nach fünf.	Now it is a quarter past five.
Ich habe nicht viel Zeit.	I do not have much time.
Ich muss mich beeilen.	I must hurry.
Ich stecke das Handy in meine Jackentasche.	I put the phone into my jacket pocket.
Dann laufe ich schnell zur Station.	Then I walk quickly to the station.

Storyboard: At the ticket machine Maya picks her ticket — one ticket, three Euro fifty, valid for the whole journey including the change. Then she sees the problem: this machine is out of order. A woman beside her points her to the other machine at the end of the platform. Maya thanks her, hurries over and buys her ticket there.
Ich stehe im Bahnhof vor dem Automaten.	I am standing in the station in front of the machine.
Ich muss eine Fahrkarte kaufen.	I must buy a ticket.
Meine Fahrt mit der U-Bahn und der S-Bahn kostet drei Euro fünfzig.	My journey with the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn costs three Euro fifty.
Ich brauche nur eine Fahrkarte für die ganze Fahrt.	I only need one ticket for the whole journey.
Ich muss später umsteigen.	I have to change trains later.
Aber diese Fahrkarte gilt für alles.	But this ticket is valid for everything.
Ich drücke auf den Bildschirm.	I press on the screen.
Nichts passiert.	Nothing happens.
Dann sehe ich ein kleines Schild.	Then I see a small sign.
Der Automat ist außer Betrieb.	The machine is out of order.
Eine Frau steht neben mir.	A woman is standing next to me.
Sie sieht mein Problem.	She sees my problem.
„Der Automat funktioniert nicht“, sagt sie.	"The machine does not work," she says.
„Am Ende vom Bahnsteig ist noch ein Automat.“	"At the end of the platform there is another machine."
Sie zeigt dorthin.	She points over there.
„Oh, vielen Dank“, sage ich.	"Oh, thank you very much," I say.
Ich gehe schnell zu dem anderen Automaten.	I walk quickly to the other machine.
Ich muss mich beeilen.	I must hurry.
Hier funktioniert der Bildschirm.	Here the screen works.
Ich kaufe meine Fahrkarte.	I buy my ticket.

Storyboard: On the platform Maya goes straight to the small yellow stamping box on the pillar — one must stamp a paper ticket. She pushes the ticket into the slot and hears a loud click. Now the ticket is valid.
Ich habe jetzt meine Fahrkarte.	I have my ticket now.
Ich stehe auf dem Bahnsteig.	I am standing on the platform.
Aber ich kann noch nicht einsteigen.	But I cannot get in yet.
Ich muss die Fahrkarte zuerst stempeln.	I must stamp the ticket first.
Ohne Stempel ist die Fahrkarte nicht gültig.	Without a stamp the ticket is not valid.
Ich sehe einen kleinen Kasten.	I see a small box.
Er hängt an einer Säule.	It is hanging on a pillar.
Der Kasten ist leuchtend gelb.	The box is bright yellow.
Ich gehe zu der Säule hinüber.	I walk over to the pillar.
Ich stecke die Fahrkarte in den Schlitz.	I put the ticket into the slot.
Ich höre ein lautes Klicken.	I hear a loud click.
Der Kasten druckt die Uhrzeit auf die Fahrkarte.	The machine prints the time on the ticket.
Ich ziehe sie wieder heraus.	I pull it back out.
Jetzt ist meine Fahrkarte gültig.	Now my ticket is valid.
Ich stecke sie sicher in meine Jackentasche.	I put it safely into my jacket pocket.
Heute fahre ich weit mit der U-Bahn.	Today I am travelling far with the U-Bahn.
Später muss ich dann in die S-Bahn umsteigen.	Later I must then change to the S-Bahn.
Ich schaue auf die Gleise.	I look at the tracks.
Mein Zug kommt in zwei Minuten.	My train is coming in two minutes.

Storyboard: The bright yellow U-Bahn arrives at the platform. The passengers get out first, then Maya gets in. The doors close with a warning beep, and the train rolls into the dark tunnel. Maya finds a free seat by the window and holds her backpack on her lap.
Die U-Bahn kommt an.	The U-Bahn arrives.
Sie ist hellgelb.	It is bright yellow.
Der Zug hält am Bahnsteig.	The train stops at the platform.
Die Türen gehen auf.	The doors open.
Zuerst steigen die anderen Fahrgäste aus.	First the other passengers get out.
Ich warte kurz auf dem Bahnsteig.	I wait briefly on the platform.
Dann steige ich ein.	Then I get in.
Ich muss heute weit fahren.	I have to travel far today.
Ich fahre meistens gern mit der U-Bahn.	I usually like travelling with the U-Bahn.
Es gibt einen lauten Piepton.	There is a loud beep.
Die Türen schließen sich schnell.	The doors close quickly.
Der Zug fährt los.	The train departs.
Wir fahren direkt in den dunklen Tunnel.	We ride straight into the dark tunnel.
Ich suche einen Sitzplatz.	I look for a seat.
Ich sehe einen freien Platz am Fenster.	I see a free seat by the window.
Ich setze mich hin.	I sit down.
Ich nehme meinen Rucksack ab.	I take my backpack off.
Ich halte den Rucksack auf dem Schoß.	I hold the backpack on my lap.
Jetzt kann ich entspannen.	Now I can relax.

Storyboard: At the next station a lot of people get in, and the train is suddenly quite full. An older passenger stops beside Maya and asks: is the seat free? Maya says yes and moves over a little, so that he can sit down comfortably. They exchange a few friendly words about the mild spring day.
An der nächsten Station steigen viele Leute ein.	At the next station, a lot of people get in.
Die U-Bahn ist plötzlich ziemlich voll.	The U-Bahn is suddenly quite full.
Ein älterer Fahrgast bleibt neben mir stehen.	An older passenger stops next to me.
„Entschuldigung, ist der Platz hier frei?“, fragt er.	“Excuse me, is this seat free?” he asks.
„Ja, natürlich“, sage ich.	“Yes, of course,” I say.
Ich rutsche ein bisschen zur Seite.	I move over a little.
So kann er bequem sitzen.	So he can sit comfortably.
„Vielen Dank“, sagt der Mann und lächelt.	“Thank you very much,” says the man and smiles.
„Müssen Sie weit fahren?“, frage ich.	“Do you have to travel far?” I ask.
„Nein, ich muss nur ins Zentrum fahren“, sagt er.	“No, I only have to travel to the center,” he says.
„Mit der U-Bahn geht das zum Glück schnell.“	“With the U-Bahn, that is luckily fast.”
Er schaut zum Fenster.	He looks to the window.
„Die Sonne scheint schön warm“, sagt er.	"The sun is shining nice and warm," he says.
„Das Wetter ist heute wirklich schön.“	"The weather is really nice today."
„Ja, endlich wird es Frühling“, sage ich.	"Yes, spring is finally coming," I say.
„Hoffentlich bleibt es so“, sagt er.	"Hopefully it stays like this," he says.
„Das hoffe ich sehr“, antworte ich.	“I hope so very much,” I answer.

Storyboard: A voice over the loudspeaker announces the big connection station. Maya must change trains here. She gets out of the U-Bahn and follows the signs through the busy hall. Up on the platform above ground her S-Bahn is already standing with its doors open, and she has to hurry the last few metres.
Eine Stimme kommt aus dem Lautsprecher.	A voice comes from the loudspeaker.
Sie sagt den großen Bahnhof an.	It announces the big station.
Hier muss ich umsteigen.	I must change trains here.
Die U-Bahn hält an und ich steige aus.	The U-Bahn stops and I get out.
Ich muss jetzt mit der S-Bahn fahren.	I must travel with the S-Bahn now.
Der Bahnhof ist sehr groß und voll.	The station is very big and full.
Ich sehe die Schilder für die S-Bahn.	I see the signs for the S-Bahn.
Ich laufe schnell durch die große Halle.	I walk quickly through the large hall.
Dann gehe ich die Treppe nach oben.	Then I go up the stairs.
Der Bahnsteig für die S-Bahn ist oben.	The platform for the S-Bahn is upstairs.
Ich sehe meine S-Bahn schon.	I already see my S-Bahn.
Sie steht am Bahnsteig und wartet.	It is standing at the platform and waiting.
Die Türen sind noch offen.	The doors are still open.
Ich renne die letzten Meter.	I run the last few metres.
Mit meinem Rucksack steige ich schnell ein.	I get in quickly with my backpack.
the s bahn ride
Storyboard: The doors close behind her and the S-Bahn pulls out. This train runs above the streets, and she looks out of the window at the city going past. She rarely takes the S-Bahn. After a few stops she sees the wide water of the river. She must get out soon.
Die Türen schließen sich.	The doors close.
Die S-Bahn fährt ab.	The S-Bahn pulls out.
Ich sitze wieder am Fenster.	I sit by the window again.
Dieser Zug fährt über den Straßen.	This train runs above the streets.
Ich schaue nach draußen.	I look outside.
Ich fahre selten mit der S-Bahn.	I rarely travel with the S-Bahn.
Oft fahre ich nur mit der U-Bahn zur Arbeit.	I often only travel with the U-Bahn to work.
Aber die Fahrt hier oben ist sehr schön.	But the ride up here is very beautiful.
Ich sehe viele Häuser von oben.	I see many houses from above.
Die Nachmittagssonne scheint auf die Dächer.	The afternoon sun shines on the roofs.
Nach ein paar Stationen sehe ich Wasser.	After a few stops I see water.
Das ist der Fluss.	That is the river.
Der Fluss ist hier sehr breit.	The river is very wide here.
Ich schaue auf meine App.	I look at my app.
Ich muss bald aussteigen.	I must get out soon.
Die nächste Station ist meine Station.	The next station is my station.
Ich nehme meinen Rucksack.	I take my backpack.
Dann stehe ich auf und gehe zur Tür.	Then I stand up and walk to the door.
arriving at the river
Storyboard: Maya gets out at the next station and walks down the stairs. She follows the riverbank between the old brick buildings. Then she finds the small coffee roaster, and the smell of roasted beans reaches her out on the street.
Die S-Bahn hält an der nächsten Station.	The S-Bahn stops at the next station.
Ich muss hier aussteigen.	I must get out here.
Ich steige aus und gehe zum Ausgang.	I get out and walk to the exit.
Dann laufe ich die lange Treppe hinunter.	Then I walk down the long stairs.
Unten bin ich direkt am Fluss.	At the bottom, I am right by the river.
Ich gehe am Ufer entlang.	I walk along the riverbank.
Hier stehen viele alte Gebäude.	Here stand many old buildings.
Sie sind alle aus rotem Backstein.	They are all made of red brick.
Der Weg zwischen den Gebäuden ist sehr schön.	The path between the buildings is very beautiful.
Ich suche die kleine Kaffeerösterei.	I am looking for the small coffee roaster.
Ich schaue auf mein Handy.	I look at my phone.
Das Geschäft muss hier in der Straße sein.	The shop must be here in the street.
Ich gehe noch ein paar Meter weiter.	I walk a few more metres.
Da vorne sehe ich ein kleines Geschäft.	Up ahead I see a small shop.
Das ist die Kaffeerösterei.	That is the coffee roaster.
Ich stehe noch draußen auf der Straße.	I am still standing outside on the street.
Aber ich rieche die gerösteten Bohnen schon hier.	But I smell the roasted beans already here.
Es riecht nach wunderbarem Kaffee.	It smells like wonderful coffee.
Ich habe noch ein paar Minuten.	I still have a few minutes.
Ich gehe schnell mit meinem Rucksack zur Tür.	I walk quickly to the door with my backpack.

Storyboard: It is five minutes before six when Maya opens the door. Inside the shop it is warm and dark and full of sacks. Maya greets the man behind the counter and asks which coffee he recommends. He lets her smell two kinds and she chooses a dark coffee. He weighs out the beans and she pays. Outside the sun is on the water, and she walks a little along the river with the packet in her backpack.
Es ist fünf Minuten vor sechs.	It is five minutes to six.
Ich öffne die Tür.	I open the door.
Im Geschäft ist es warm und dunkel.	Inside the shop it is warm and dark.
Überall stehen große Säcke.	There are large sacks everywhere.
Ich begrüße den Mann hinter der Theke.	I greet the man behind the counter.
Er sagt freundlich: „Guten Abend.“	He says kindly: "Good evening."
Ich frage: „Welchen Kaffee können Sie empfehlen?“	I ask: "Which coffee can you recommend?"
Er zeigt mir zwei Sorten Kaffee.	He shows me two kinds of coffee.
Ich rieche an den Bohnen.	I smell the beans.
Ich sage: „Ich nehme den dunklen Kaffee, bitte.“	I say: "I will take the dark coffee, please."
Der Mann wiegt die Bohnen ab.	The man weighs out the beans.
„Das macht zwölf Euro“, sagt er.	"That makes twelve Euro," he says.
Ich bezahle.	I pay.
Ich packe das Päckchen in meinen Rucksack.	I pack the packet into my backpack.
Dann gehe ich nach draußen.	Then I go outside.
Die Sonne scheint auf das Wasser.	The sun shines on the water.
Ich gehe noch ein bisschen am Fluss entlang.	I walk a little along the river.
