Storyboard: April in Berlin — the spring is here, but the days swing between warm sun and cold grey rain. On Wednesday morning, Maya wakes up and feels terrible. She tries to swallow, but her throat hurts, and her head hurts too.

Ich versuche zu schlucken.I try to swallow.
Mir tut der Hals furchtbar weh.My throat hurts terribly.
Ich versuche, mich aufzusetzen.I try to sit up.

Mein ganzer Körper ist schwer.My whole body is heavy.

Storyboard: She takes her phone and calls Jonas. She tells him that she is staying in the flat today because she is sick. Jonas is sympathetic; he tells her to stay in bed and rest.
Ich liege noch im Bett und nehme mein Handy.I am still lying in bed and take my phone.
Normalerweise fahre ich jetzt mit der U-Bahn ins Büro.Usually I take the U-Bahn to the office now.
Aber heute arbeite ich nicht.But today I am not working.
Ich rufe meinen Kollegen Jonas an.I call my colleague Jonas.
Er geht sofort ans Telefon.He answers the phone immediately.
„Guten Morgen, Maya“, sagt er."Good morning, Maya," he says.
„Morgen, Jonas“, antworte ich leise."Morning, Jonas," I answer quietly.
„Ich komme heute nicht ins Büro, weil ich krank bin.“"I am not coming to the office today, because I am sick."
Jonas klingt sofort besorgt.Jonas immediately sounds worried.
„Oh nein, du klingst gar nicht gut“, sagt er."Oh no, you do not sound good at all," he says.
„Ja, mir geht es wirklich nicht gut“, sage ich."Yes, I really do not feel well," I say.
„Mir tut der Kopf sehr weh.“"My head hurts a lot."
„Das klingt nach einer starken Erkältung“, sagt Jonas."That sounds like a heavy cold," Jonas says.
Er ist sehr verständnisvoll.He is very sympathetic.
„Du sollst im Bett bleiben und dich ausruhen“, rät er mir."You should stay in bed and rest," he advises me.
„Ja, ich bleibe heute definitiv in der Wohnung“, sage ich."Yes, I am definitely staying in the flat today," I say.
„Gut.“"Good."
„Ich sage dem Team im Büro Bescheid“, sagt er."I will let the team in the office know," he says.
„Danke, Jonas“, antworte ich."Thank you, Jonas," I answer.
„Gute Besserung, Maya!“, wünscht er mir."Get well soon, Maya!" he wishes me.
Ich lege das Handy weg und schließe wieder die Augen.I put the phone away and close my eyes again.

Storyboard: Maya calls the local doctor's practice. The receptionist answers and asks how she can help. Maya explains that she needs an appointment today because her ears also hurt now. The receptionist gives her a slot for half past ten.
Ich suche die Nummer und rufe die Arztpraxis an.I search for the number and call the doctor's practice.
Das Telefon klingelt nur zweimal.The phone only rings twice.
„Praxis Doktor Schmidt, guten Morgen“, sagt die Rezeptionistin."Practice Doctor Schmidt, good morning," says the receptionist.
„Was kann ich für Sie tun?“"What can I do for you?"
„Guten Morgen, hier ist Maya Flores“, sage ich leise."Good morning, this is Maya Flores," I say quietly.
„Mir geht es heute gar nicht gut.“"I do not feel good at all today."
„Ich brauche einen Termin, weil ich krank bin.“"I need an appointment, because I am sick."
„Was fehlt Ihnen denn?“, fragt sie freundlich."What is the matter with you?" she asks kindly.
„Mir tut der Kopf weh und mir tut der Hals weh“, erkläre ich."My head hurts and my throat hurts," I explain.
„Und jetzt tun mir auch die Ohren weh.“"And now my ears hurt too."
„Oh je, das klingt nach einer starken Erkältung“, sagt die Rezeptionistin."Oh dear, that sounds like a heavy cold," says the receptionist.
„Sind Sie schon Patientin bei uns?“"Are you already a patient with us?"
„Ja, das bin ich“, antworte ich und huste."Yes, I am," I answer and cough.
Sie tippt kurz auf ihrer Tastatur.She types briefly on her keyboard.
„Sie sollen gleich heute Vormittag vorbeikommen“, sagt sie."You should come by right away this morning," she says.
„Wir haben um halb elf noch einen Termin frei.“"We still have an appointment free at half past ten."
„Halb elf ist gut“, sage ich erleichtert."Half past ten is good," I say relieved.
„Bitte bringen Sie Ihre Versichertenkarte mit“, erinnert sie mich."Please bring your insurance card with you," she reminds me.
Ich bedanke mich, lege auf und stehe langsam auf.I thank her, hang up and get up slowly.

Storyboard: Maya dresses, puts on her dark green coat and walks slowly to the practice. At the desk she hands over her Versichertenkarte. The receptionist processes it without reading the long number aloud, then tells Maya she should take a seat in the waiting room.
Ich stehe langsam auf und ziehe mich an.I stand up slowly and get dressed.
Ich ziehe meinen dunkelgrünen Mantel an, weil es draußen nass und kalt ist.I put on my dark green coat because it is wet and cold outside.
Dann gehe ich langsam zur Arztpraxis.Then I walk slowly to the doctor's practice.
Mir tut der Kopf weh.My head hurts.
Ich komme in der Praxis an und gehe direkt zur Rezeption.I arrive at the practice and go straight to the reception.
Die Rezeptionistin sieht mich an.The receptionist looks at me.
"Guten Morgen", sage ich leise."Good morning," I say quietly.
"Ich habe einen Termin um halb elf.""I have an appointment at half past ten."
"Guten Morgen, Frau Flores", sagt sie freundlich."Good morning, Frau Flores," she says friendly.
"Ich brauche bitte Ihre Versichertenkarte.""I need your health insurance card, please."
Ich öffne meine Tasche und gebe ihr die Versichertenkarte.I open my bag and give her the health insurance card.
Sie nimmt die Karte und tippt etwas in den Computer.She takes the card and types something into the computer.
Nach einem kurzen Moment gibt sie mir die Karte zurück.After a short moment, she gives me the card back.
"Vielen Dank", sagt sie."Thank you very much," she says.
"Sie sollen im Wartezimmer Platz nehmen.""You should take a seat in the waiting room."
"Der Arzt ruft Sie dann auf.""The doctor will call you then."
Ich nicke stumm, weil mir auch der Hals wehtut.I nod silently, because my throat hurts too.
Dann gehe ich langsam in das Wartezimmer.Then I slowly walk into the waiting room.

Storyboard: Maya sits in the quiet waiting room with three other sniffling patients. She tries to look at a magazine, but puts it down again because she cannot concentrate. She just leans back and closes her eyes. The scene ends there, waiting — she is not called in until the next scene.
Ich gehe in das Wartezimmer.I go into the waiting room.
Der Raum ist sehr ruhig.The room is very quiet.
Drei andere Patienten sitzen schon hier.Three other patients are already sitting here.
Sie schniefen leise, weil sie auch krank sind.They sniffle quietly, because they are also sick.
Ich setze mich auf einen freien Stuhl.I sit down on a free chair.
Ich nehme eine Zeitschrift vom Tisch.I take a magazine from the table.
Ich versuche, die Zeitschrift zu lesen.I try to read the magazine.
Aber ich kann mich gar nicht konzentrieren.But I cannot concentrate at all.
Mir tut der Kopf extrem weh.My head hurts extremely.
Mein Hals ist trocken und mir tun auch die Ohren weh.My throat is dry and my ears hurt too.
Ich lege die Zeitschrift wieder zurück auf den Tisch.I put the magazine back on the table.
Ich weiß, ich soll mich jetzt einfach ausruhen.I know I should just rest now.
Ich lehne mich in meinem Stuhl zurück.I lean back in my chair.
Ich schließe meine Augen und atme langsam.I close my eyes and breathe slowly.
Hoffentlich ruft der Arzt bald meinen Namen.Hopefully the doctor calls my name soon.
Ich möchte einfach nur zurück in mein warmes Bett.I just want to go back to my warm bed.

Storyboard: The doctor — a man, the same one throughout the week — opens his door and calls her name. He greets her, asks her to sit, and asks how she is doing. Maya replies honestly that she does not feel good at all. She lists the body parts that hurt, pointing to her head, throat and chest. Then she asks, without much hope, whether she can play badminton tomorrow.
Die Tür geht auf und der Arzt ruft meinen Namen.The door opens and the doctor calls my name.
„Frau Flores, bitte!“, sagt er freundlich."Frau Flores, please!" he says cordially.
Ich stehe langsam auf und gehe in das Sprechzimmer.I stand up slowly and walk into the consultation room.
„Guten Morgen, nehmen Sie bitte Platz“, sagt der Arzt."Good morning, please take a seat," the doctor says.
Ich setze mich auf den kleinen Stuhl.I sit down on the small chair.
„Wie geht es Ihnen heute?“, fragt er mich."How are you doing today?" he asks me.
Ich antworte ehrlich, weil ich mich wirklich schrecklich fühle.I answer honestly, because I really feel terrible.
„Mir geht es gar nicht gut“, sage ich."I am not doing well at all," I say.
Ich zeige auf meinen Kopf und auf meinen Hals.I point to my head and to my throat.
„Mir tut der Kopf weh, und mir tut der Hals weh“, erkläre ich."My head hurts, and my throat hurts," I explain.
Der Arzt nickt und sieht mich aufmerksam an.The doctor nods and looks at me attentively.
„Und meine Brust tut auch weh“, füge ich hinzu."And my chest hurts too," I add.
Ich denke an meinen Sport am Donnerstagabend.I think about my sport on Thursday evening.
Heute ist Mittwoch, und ich habe nicht viel Hoffnung.Today is Wednesday, and I do not have much hope.
Aber ich frage den Arzt trotzdem.But I ask the doctor anyway.
„Kann ich morgen Abend Badminton spielen?“, frage ich leise."Can I play badminton tomorrow evening?" I ask quietly.
Der Arzt schaut mich überrascht an.The doctor looks at me in surprise.

Storyboard: After a quick examination with a stethoscope and a light, the doctor confirms it is a heavy spring cold. He gives strict advice: sleep a lot, drink warm tea — and no, she absolutely should not play tomorrow. He prints a green prescription — the kind for medicine the patient buys herself, which the gloss should make plain.
Der Arzt nimmt sein Stethoskop.The doctor takes his stethoscope.
Er hört meine Brust ab.He listens to my chest.
Dann nimmt er eine kleine Lampe und schaut in meinen Hals.Then he takes a small light and looks into my throat.
„Ihr Hals ist sehr rot“, sagt der Arzt."Your throat is very red," the doctor says.
Er setzt sich wieder an seinen Schreibtisch.He sits back down at his desk.
„Sie haben eine schwere Erkältung, Frau Flores“, sagt er."You have a severe cold, Frau Flores," he says.
„Das Wetter im April ist oft ein Problem, weil es so schnell wechselt.“"The weather in April is often a problem, because it changes so quickly."
Er sieht mich ernst an.He looks at me seriously.
„Sie sollen jetzt viel schlafen“, sagt er."You should sleep a lot now," he says.
„Und Sie sollen viel warmen Tee trinken.“"And you should drink a lot of warm tea."
Er schüttelt den Kopf.He shakes his head.
„Und nein, Sie sollen morgen auf keinen Fall Badminton spielen.“"And no, you absolutely should not play badminton tomorrow."
„Sie brauchen Ruhe, weil Sie wirklich krank sind.“"You need rest, because you are really sick."
Er tippt etwas auf seinem Computer.He types something on his computer.
Der kleine Drucker auf dem Schreibtisch druckt ein Rezept.The small printer on the desk prints a prescription.
Das Rezept ist grün.The prescription is green.
Ein grünes Rezept bedeutet, dass ich die Medizin selbst bezahle.A green prescription means that I pay for the medicine myself.
Der Arzt gibt mir das grüne Papier.The doctor gives me the green paper.
„Gehen Sie in die Apotheke und dann direkt ins Bett“, sagt er."Go to the pharmacy and then directly to bed," he says.
Ich bedanke mich und stehe langsam auf.I thank him and stand up slowly.

Storyboard: On the way home, Maya stops at the pharmacy. The pharmacist reads the prescription, fetches the medicine, and explains how many tablets Maya should take a day. Maya pays a few Euro in cash, takes the receipt, and walks the last few streets home.
Ich verlasse die Arztpraxis und gehe zur Apotheke.I leave the doctor's practice and walk to the pharmacy.
Mir tut der Kopf immer noch weh, und ich möchte schnell nach Hause.My head still hurts, and I want to go home quickly.
Ich gehe hinein und gebe dem Apotheker mein grünes Rezept.I go inside and give the pharmacist my green prescription.

Ich greife in meinen dunkelgrünen Mantel und nehme mein Portemonnaie heraus.I reach into my dark green coat and take out my wallet.

Er gibt mir das Medikament und den Kassenbon.He gives me the medicine and the receipt.
Ich sage Danke und stecke die Schachtel in meine Manteltasche.I say thank you and put the box into my coat pocket.
Dann verlasse ich die Apotheke.Then I leave the pharmacy.
Ich laufe die letzten paar Straßen nach Hause.I walk the last few streets home.
Ich will jetzt einfach nur in mein Bett.I just want to get into my bed now.

Storyboard: Back in the flat, Maya puts on her pyjamas. Sabine knocks on the door and hands over a thermos of fresh ginger tea; she came over because Maya's cough is audible through the wall. Sabine tells Maya she should just sleep now, and leaves her to rest.
Ich bin wieder in der Wohnung.I am back in the flat.
Ich ziehe meinen Schlafanzug an.I put on my pyjamas.
Ich huste laut.I cough loudly.
Mir tut der Hals sehr weh.My throat hurts a lot.
Plötzlich klopft jemand an die Tür.Suddenly, someone knocks on the door.
Ich öffne die Tür langsam.I open the door slowly.
Sabine steht da.Sabine is standing there.
Sie hat eine Thermoskanne in der Hand.She has a thermos in her hand.
„Hallo Maya“, sagt Sabine."Hello Maya," Sabine says.
„Ich höre dich im Treppenhaus, weil du so viel hustest.“"I hear you in the stairwell, because you are coughing so much."
„Hier ist frischer Ingwertee für dich.“"Here is fresh ginger tea for you."
Sie gibt mir die Thermoskanne.She gives me the thermos.
„Danke, Sabine“, sage ich."Thank you, Sabine," I say.
„Mir tut auch der Kopf weh.“"My head also hurts."
„Du sollst jetzt den Tee trinken und einfach schlafen“, sagt sie."You should drink the tea now and just sleep," she says.
Sie geht wieder in ihre Wohnung.She goes back to her flat.
