She looks back — not over the day, but over the whole stretch since January: the cold arrival, the Anmeldung, the first day at the office, the winter coat, the badminton club. Against all of that, an ordinary summer birthday in a city that is now hers. She reflects simply that she had a wonderful birthday and that the evening was exactly what she wanted, feeling fully present and happy to be thirty-two. | |
