Storyboard: Maya walks into the busy Ernakulam market on a warm morning. Vendors call out their fresh goods over the noise of the crowd, and she takes out her cloth shopping bags, ready to buy groceries and supplies for the week.
ഇന്ന് രാവിലെ നല്ല ചൂടുണ്ട്.It is very warm this morning.
ഞാൻ ഇപ്പോൾ എറണാകുളം മാർക്കറ്റിലാണ്.I am now in the Ernakulam market.
ഒരുപാട് ആളുകൾ സാധനങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങുന്നു.Many people are buying things.
ചുറ്റും വലിയ ശബ്ദമുണ്ട്.There is a loud noise all around.
കച്ചവടക്കാർ ഉച്ചത്തിൽ വിളിച്ചു പറയുന്നു.The vendors are calling out loudly.
അവർ പുതിയ പച്ചക്കറികളും പഴങ്ങളും വിൽക്കുന്നു.They are selling fresh vegetables and fruits.
എനിക്ക് ഈ ആഴ്ചത്തേക്ക് കുറച്ചു സാധനങ്ങൾ വേണം.I want some supplies for this week.
എന്റെ കൈയിൽ തുണി സഞ്ചികൾ ഉണ്ട്.I have cloth bags with me.
ഞാൻ ഒരു സഞ്ചി പുറത്തെടുക്കുന്നു.I take out a bag.
ഞാൻ മാർക്കറ്റിലൂടെ പതുക്കെ നടക്കുന്നു.I walk slowly through the market.
ഇവിടെ പലതരം കടകൾ ഉണ്ട്.There are many types of shops here.

Storyboard: She stops at a large vegetable stall and asks the price of tomatoes per kilo. The vendor replies with the amount; she agrees and asks for two kilos, and he weighs them out on a metal scale.
അവിടെ നല്ല ചുവന്ന തക്കാളി ഉണ്ട്.There are nice red tomatoes there.
എനിക്ക് കുറച്ചു തക്കാളി വേണം.I want some tomatoes.
"ഒരു കിലോ തക്കാളിക്ക് വില എത്രയാ?" ഞാൻ ചോദിക്കുന്നു."What is the price of tomatoes per kilo?" I ask.
"അറുപതു രൂപ," അദ്ദേഹം മറുപടി പറയുന്നു."Sixty rupees," he replies.
വില കൂടുതലല്ല.The price is not high.
"ശരി, എനിക്ക് രണ്ടു കിലോ തക്കാളി തരൂ," ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് പറയുന്നു."Okay, give me two kilos of tomatoes," I tell him.
കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ നല്ല തക്കാളികൾ എടുക്കുന്നു.The vendor takes good tomatoes.
അദ്ദേഹം അത് ഒരു ഇരുമ്പുത്രാസിൽ വെക്കുന്നു.He puts them on a metal scale.
അദ്ദേഹം തക്കാളി തൂക്കുന്നു.He weighs the tomatoes.
"കൃത്യം രണ്ടു കിലോ ഉണ്ട്," അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു."There is exactly two kilos," he says.
"ആകെ എത്ര രൂപ ആയി?" ഞാൻ ചോദിക്കുന്നു."How much is it in total?" I ask.
"നൂറ്റിയിരുപതു രൂപ," കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ പറയുന്നു."One hundred and twenty rupees," the vendor says.
ഞാൻ ബാഗിൽ നിന്ന് പണം എടുക്കുന്നു.I take money from the bag.
ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് നൂറ്റിയിരുപതു രൂപ കൊടുക്കുന്നു.I give him one hundred and twenty rupees.
അദ്ദേഹം തക്കാളി എന്റെ തുണിസഞ്ചിയിൽ ഇടുന്നു.He puts the tomatoes into my cloth bag.

Storyboard: At a nearby fruit stand, a woman sells fresh mangoes. The vendor cuts a small, bright slice and offers it to Maya to taste. It is perfectly sweet. The vendor names the price per kilo unprompted, and Maya happily asks her to pack one kilo of the fruit.
അടുത്ത് ഒരു പഴക്കട ഞാൻ കാണുന്നു.Nearby, I see a fruit stall.
അവിടെ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ നല്ല പുതിയ മാമ്പഴം വിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.A woman is selling fresh mangoes there.
മാമ്പഴം കാണാൻ നല്ല ഭംഗിയുണ്ട്.The mangoes look very beautiful.
അവർ എന്നെ നോക്കി ചിരിക്കുന്നു.She looks at me and smiles.
അവർ ഒരു മഞ്ഞ മാമ്പഴത്തിന്റെ ചെറിയ കഷ്ണം മുറിക്കുന്നു.She cuts a small piece of a yellow mango.
എന്നിട്ട് അവർ അത് എനിക്ക് തരുന്നു.Then she gives it to me.
"ഇതൊന്ന് കഴിച്ചു നോക്കൂ," അവർ പറയുന്നു."Try eating this," she says.
ഞാൻ ആ മാമ്പഴം രുചിച്ചു നോക്കുന്നു.I taste the mango.
ഇതിന് നല്ല മധുരമുണ്ട്!It is very sweet!
"ഇത് വളരെ രുചികരമാണ്," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു."This is very tasty," I say.
"ഒരു കിലോയ്ക്ക് എൺപതു രൂപയാണ്," ആ സ്ത്രീ പറയുന്നു."One kilo is eighty rupees," the woman says.
ഞാൻ എന്റെ തുണിസഞ്ചി തുറക്കുന്നു.I open my cloth bag.
"എനിക്ക് ഒരു കിലോ മാമ്പഴം വേണം," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു."I need one kilo of mangoes," I say.
"ഒരു കിലോ പായ്ക്ക് ചെയ്തു തരൂ.""Please pack one kilo."
അവർ മാമ്പഴം നന്നായി പായ്ക്ക് ചെയ്യുന്നു.She packs the mangoes nicely.
ഞാൻ പഴ്സിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു നൂറു രൂപയുടെ നോട്ട് എടുക്കുന്നു.I take a hundred-rupee note from my purse.
ഞാൻ ആ പണം അവർക്ക് കൊടുക്കുന്നു.I give the money to her.
അവർ എനിക്ക് ബാക്കി ഇരുപതു രൂപ തിരികെ തരുന്നു.She gives me twenty rupees back as change.
ഞാൻ അവർക്ക് നന്ദി പറയുന്നു.I thank her.
ഞാൻ സന്തോഷത്തോടെ മാമ്പഴം വാങ്ങുന്നു.I happily take the mangoes.
too expensive
Storyboard: Maya wanders past the food stalls and sees a merchant selling beautiful, handmade wooden kitchen ladles. She picks one up and asks the price. The vendor names a very high amount in rupees; Maya smiles, politely decides it is too expensive for now, and puts it back.
ഞാൻ ഭക്ഷണക്കടകൾ പിന്നിട്ട് നടക്കുന്നു.I walk past the food stalls.
അവിടെ ഞാൻ ഒരു ചെറിയ കട കാണുന്നു.There I see a small shop.
കടയിൽ മനോഹരമായ തവികൾ ഉണ്ട്.There are beautiful ladles in the shop.
അവ തടി കൊണ്ടുള്ള തവികളാണ്.They are wooden ladles.
ഞാൻ ഒരു തവി കയ്യിൽ എടുക്കുന്നു.I take a ladle in my hand.
അത് കൈകൊണ്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയതാണ്.It is handmade.
കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ എന്നെ നോക്കുന്നു.The shopkeeper looks at me.
"ഇതിന് വില എത്ര?" ഞാൻ ചോദിക്കുന്നു."What is the price of this?" I ask.
"അതിന് നാനൂറ്റി അൻപത് രൂപയാണ്," അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു."That is four hundred and fifty rupees," he says.
നാനൂറ്റി അൻപത് രൂപയോ!Four hundred and fifty rupees!
അത് വളരെ കൂടിയ വിലയാണ്.That is a very high price.
എനിക്ക് ഇപ്പോൾ അത് വേണ്ട.I do not want it now.
ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ നോക്കി ചിരിക്കുന്നു.I smile at him.
"വില കൂടുതലാണ്," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു."It is too expensive," I say.

അദ്ദേഹം ചിരിച്ച് തലയാട്ടുന്നു.He smiles and nods.

Storyboard: She spots a wholesale banana stall with several varieties hanging in heavy bunches. A handwritten slate clearly shows the price of each size of bunch. Maya reads the board, tells the vendor she wants a small bunch, and hands him the exact amount in small notes without needing to ask the price.
പിന്നെ ഞാൻ ഒരു വാഴപ്പഴക്കട കാണുന്നു.Then I see a banana stall.
ഞാൻ വാഴപ്പഴം വിൽക്കുന്ന ഒരു വലിയ കട കാണുന്നു.I see a big shop selling bananas.
കടയിൽ വലിയ വാഴപ്പഴക്കുലകൾ ഉണ്ട്.There are big banana bunches in the shop.
പലതരം വാഴപ്പഴങ്ങൾ അവിടെ ഉണ്ട്.There are many types of bananas there.
കടയ്ക്ക് മുന്നിൽ ഒരു ചെറിയ ബോർഡ് ഉണ്ട്.There is a small board in front of the shop.
അതിൽ വില വ്യക്തമായി എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.The price is clearly written on it.
ഞാൻ ആ ബോർഡ് വായിക്കുന്നു.I read that board.
ഒരു ചെറിയ കുലയ്ക്ക് അറുപതു രൂപ ആണ് വില.The price for a small bunch is sixty rupees.
വലിയ കുലയ്ക്ക് നൂറ്റിയിരുപതു രൂപ ആണ്.For a big bunch, it is one hundred and twenty rupees.
എനിക്ക് ഒരു ചെറിയ കുല മതി.A small bunch is enough for me.
ഞാൻ കടക്കാരനെ നോക്കുന്നു.I look at the shopkeeper.
"എനിക്ക് ആ ചെറിയ കുല വേണം," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു."I want that small bunch," I say.
അദ്ദേഹം ആ ചെറിയ കുല എനിക്ക് തരുന്നു.He gives me that small bunch.
ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് വില ചോദിക്കുന്നില്ല.I do not ask him the price.
എന്റെ കയ്യിൽ പത്തു രൂപയുടെ ചെറിയ നോട്ടുകൾ ഉണ്ട്.I have small ten-rupee notes in my hand.
ഞാൻ കൃത്യം അറുപതു രൂപ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കൊടുക്കുന്നു.I give him exactly sixty rupees.
അദ്ദേഹം ആ പണം വാങ്ങുന്നു.He takes that money.
ഞാൻ വാഴപ്പഴം എന്റെ സഞ്ചിയിൽ വെക്കുന്നു.I put the bananas in my bag.
snack stall and change
Storyboard: Maya stops at a brightly lit snack stall to buy treats for her colleagues at the software company. She asks for a packet of banana chips and a packet of jaggery-coated bananas, then asks what the total comes to. The vendor calculates the amount, takes her five-hundred rupee note, and carefully counts out her change.
ഞാൻ വെളിച്ചമുള്ള ഒരു പലഹാരക്കടയുടെ മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു.I stand in front of a brightly lit snack stall.
സോഫ്റ്റ്‌വെയർ കമ്പനിയിലെ എന്റെ സഹപ്രവർത്തകർക്ക് പലഹാരങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങണം.I want to buy snacks for my colleagues at the software company.
"ഒരു പാക്കറ്റ് ഏത്തയ്ക്കാ ചിപ്സ് തരൂ," ഞാൻ കടക്കാരനോട് പറയുന്നു."Give me a packet of banana chips," I say to the shopkeeper.
"ഒരു പാക്കറ്റ് ശർക്കരവരട്ടിയും വേണം.""I want a packet of jaggery-coated bananas too."
അദ്ദേഹം രണ്ട് പാക്കറ്റുകൾ എടുക്കുന്നു.He takes two packets.
"ആകെ എത്ര രൂപ ആയി?" ഞാൻ ചോദിക്കുന്നു."How many rupees is it in total?" I ask.
കടക്കാരൻ വില കണക്കുകൂട്ടുന്നു.The shopkeeper calculates the price.
"ചിപ്സിന് അറുപത് രൂപ," അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു."Sixty rupees for the chips," he says.
"ശർക്കരവരട്ടിക്ക് എഴുപത് രൂപ.""Seventy rupees for the jaggery-coated bananas."
"ആകെ നൂറ്റിമുപ്പത് രൂപ.""One hundred and thirty rupees in total."
ഞാൻ എന്റെ പഴ്സ് തുറക്കുന്നു.I open my purse.
ഞാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അഞ്ഞൂറ് രൂപയുടെ നോട്ട് കൊടുക്കുന്നു.I give him a five-hundred rupee note.
അദ്ദേഹം ആ നോട്ട് വാങ്ങുന്നു.He takes that note.
അദ്ദേഹം ബാക്കി തുക ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ എണ്ണുന്നു.He carefully counts the change.
"ഇതാ ബാക്കി മുന്നൂറ്റിയെഴുപത് രൂപ," അദ്ദേഹം പറയുന്നു."Here is the balance three hundred and seventy rupees," he says.
ഞാൻ ആ പണവും പലഹാരങ്ങളും വാങ്ങുന്നു.I take that money and the snacks.
ഇത് പ്രകാശിനും മറ്റ് സഹപ്രവർത്തകർക്കും ഉള്ളതാണ്.This is for Prakash and the other colleagues.
buying spices
Storyboard: Remembering she needs spices for her cooking, Maya visits a fragrant, narrow shop packed with open sacks. She asks the merchant for a hundred grams of black pepper and cardamom; he weighs the spices, names the total, then waves a hand and rounds it down a little for her, handing over the neatly folded paper packets.
എനിക്ക് പാചകത്തിന് കുറച്ച് സുഗന്ധവ്യഞ്ജനങ്ങൾ വേണം.I need some spices for cooking.
ഞാൻ ഒരു ചെറിയ കടയിലേക്ക് പോകുന്നു.I go into a small shop.
കടയിൽ നല്ല മണമുണ്ട്.The shop has a good smell.
അവിടെ തുറന്ന ചാക്കുകളിൽ ഒരുപാട് സാധനങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്.There are many items in open sacks there.
കടക്കാരൻ അവിടെ നിൽക്കുന്നു.The shopkeeper is standing there.
"എനിക്ക് നൂറ് ഗ്രാം കുരുമുളകും നൂറ് ഗ്രാം ഏലക്കയും വേണം," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു."I need a hundred grams of black pepper and a hundred grams of cardamom," I say.
അദ്ദേഹം അത് ഒരു ത്രാസിൽ തൂക്കുന്നു.He weighs it on a scale.

അദ്ദേഹം എനിക്ക് ആ പൊതികൾ തരുന്നു.He gives me those packets.
ഞാൻ അത് എന്റെ ബാഗിൽ വെക്കുന്നു.I put them in my bag.

Storyboard: Her cloth bags are now completely full and heavy. Maya checks her watch, feels satisfied with her successful market trip, and walks out of the crowds to take an auto home with her heavy bags.
എന്റെ തുണിസഞ്ചികൾ ഇപ്പോൾ നിറഞ്ഞു.My cloth bags are now full.
അവയ്ക്ക് നല്ല ഭാരമുണ്ട്.They are very heavy.
ഞാൻ എന്റെ വാച്ച് നോക്കുന്നു.I check my watch.
സമയം പത്ത് മണി.The time is ten o'clock.
ഞാൻ വളരെ സന്തോഷത്തിലാണ്.I am very happy.
ഞാൻ മാർക്കറ്റിലെ തിരക്കിൽ നിന്ന് പുറത്തേക്ക് നടക്കുന്നു.I walk out of the crowd in the market.
അവിടെ കുറച്ച് ഓട്ടോകൾ കിടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.There are a few autos parked there.
ഞാൻ ഒരു ഓട്ടോയുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോകുന്നു.I go near an auto.
"എന്റെ വീടിന്റെ അടുത്ത് വരെ വരാമോ?" ഞാൻ ഡ്രൈവറോട് ചോദിക്കുന്നു."Can you come near my house?" I ask the driver.
"വരാം," അയാൾ പറയുന്നു."I will come," he says.
"അവിടേക്ക് എത്ര രൂപയാണ്?" ഞാൻ ചോദിക്കുന്നു."How much is it to get there?" I ask.
"നൂറ്റിയമ്പത് രൂപ," അയാൾ മറുപടി പറയുന്നു."One hundred and fifty rupees," he replies.
ഞാൻ ശരി എന്ന് പറയുന്നു.I agree to that.
അയാൾ എന്റെ സഞ്ചികൾ ഓട്ടോയിൽ വെക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്നു.He helps to put my bags in the auto.
ഞാൻ ഓട്ടോയിൽ കയറുന്നു.I get into the auto.
ഓട്ടോ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നു.The auto goes forward.
ഞാൻ പുറത്തേക്ക് നോക്കുന്നു.I look outside.
ഇന്നത്തെ ഷോപ്പിംഗ് വളരെ നന്നായി.Today's shopping went very well.
