Week 20: Maya starts volunteering at the community café

Storyboard: Maya walks to the little NGO-run community café she has frequented for months, carrying her umbrella through the light monsoon drizzle. She reflects on her decision to spend her Saturday mornings volunteering behind the counter: she wanted to meet new people and feel even more rooted in the city.

കൊച്ചിയിൽ ജൂൺ മാസം മഴക്കാലമാണ്.	June is the monsoon season in Kochi.
ഞാൻ മുൻപ് പല തവണ ഈ കഫേയിൽ വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.	I have visited this café many times before.
എന്നാൽ വോളണ്ടിയർ ആയി ഇന്ന് അവിടെ എന്റെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ ദിവസമാണ്.	But today is my first day there as a volunteer.

"അതെ," ഞാൻ മറുപടി പറയുന്നു.	"Yes," I reply.
"ഇതിനുമുൻപ് എപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും ഒരു കഫേയിൽ വോളന്റിയർ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ?" അവർ ചോദിക്കുന്നു.	"Have you ever volunteered in a café before?" she asks.
"അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു അടുക്കളയിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ?"	"Or have you worked in a kitchen?"
"ഇല്ല, ഇത് എന്റെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ തവണയാണ്," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു.	"No, this is my first time," I say.

Storyboard: Before the doors open, Jessy introduces Maya to the large, gleaming espresso machine. Maya watches closely as Jessy demonstrates the dials and the steam wand, explaining that learning to operate it properly takes patience and practice.

Storyboard: Under Jessy's watchful eye, Maya tries to make her very first coffee of the day. She struggles to angle the jug while frothing the milk, and the drink comes out completely wrong—flat and far too hot—making her laugh nervously as she apologizes.

ഞാൻ പരിഭ്രമത്തോടെ ചിരിക്കുന്നു.	I laugh nervously.
"ക്ഷമിക്കണം ജെസ്സി, ഇത് ശരിയായില്ല," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു.	"Sorry Jessy, this didn't come out right," I say.
ജെസ്സി എന്നെ നോക്കി ചിരിക്കുന്നു.	Jessy looks at me and smiles.

Storyboard: Taking a deep breath, Maya prepares her second coffee. This time, she focuses on what she has just learned to do with the steam wand, and the milk comes out smooth and frothy; Jessy nods in approval, and Maya feels a genuine rush of pride.
ഞാൻ ദീർഘമായി ഒന്ന് ശ്വാസമെടുക്കുന്നു.	I take a deep breath.
ഞാൻ എന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ കോഫി ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്നു.	I start to make my second coffee.
ഒന്നാമത്തെ കോഫിയിൽ എനിക്ക് തെറ്റുകൾ പറ്റിയിരുന്നു.	I had made mistakes in the first coffee.
ഇത്തവണ ഞാൻ സ്റ്റീം വാൻഡിൽ കൂടുതൽ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നു.	This time I pay more attention to the steam wand.
ഞാൻ പാൽപാത്രം ശരിയായി പിടിക്കുന്നു.	I hold the milk jug correctly.
പാൽ നന്നായി പതപ്പിക്കാൻ ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുകയാണ്.	I am learning to froth the milk well.
ഞാൻ സ്റ്റീം വാൻഡ് ഓൺ ചെയ്യുന്നു.	I turn on the steam wand.
ഇപ്പോൾ പാൽ നന്നായി പതഞ്ഞു വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.	Now the milk has frothed up nicely.
ഞാൻ ആ പാൽ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ കപ്പിലേക്ക് ഒഴിക്കുന്നു.	I carefully pour that milk into the cup.
ജെസ്സി ആ കോഫി നോക്കുന്നു.	Jessy looks at the coffee.
അവർക്ക് അത് ഇഷ്ടമായിട്ടുണ്ട്.	She has liked it.
"ഇത് വളരെ നന്നായിട്ടുണ്ട്, മായ," ജെസ്സി പറയുന്നു.	"This has turned out very well, Maya," Jessy says.
എനിക്ക് വളരെ സന്തോഷം തോന്നുന്നു.	I feel very happy.

Storyboard: The community café opens its doors, and Maya stands nervously at the counter to serve her first customer. Having practiced the mechanics, she now focuses entirely on the interaction—greeting the patron, carefully taking the order, and cleanly handing over the finished cup without keeping anyone waiting.
പുറത്ത് നല്ല മഴ പെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.	It was raining heavily outside.
കഫേയുടെ വാതിൽ തുറന്നു.	The door of the café opened.
ഞാൻ കൗണ്ടറിന്റെ പിന്നിൽ നിന്നു.	I stood behind the counter.
എന്റെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ കസ്റ്റമർ അകത്തേക്ക് വന്നു.	My first customer came inside.
എനിക്ക് ചെറിയ പേടിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.	I was a little nervous.
ഞാൻ ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അയാളെ സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്തു.	I welcomed him with a smile.
"നമസ്കാരം."	"Namaskaram."
"എന്ത് വേണം?"	"What would you like?"
ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു.	I asked.
"ഒരു കപ്പൂച്ചിനോ വേണം," അയാൾ പറഞ്ഞു.	"I need a cappuccino," he said.
ഞാൻ ശ്രദ്ധയോടെ ആ ഓർഡർ എടുത്തു.	I took that order carefully.
കസ്റ്റമേഴ്സിനോട് നന്നായി സംസാരിക്കാൻ ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുകയാണ്.	I am learning to converse well with customers.
ഞാൻ മെഷീനിൽ വേഗത്തിൽ കോഫി ഉണ്ടാക്കി.	I made the coffee quickly in the machine.
ജെസ്സിയോടൊപ്പം ഞാൻ അത് പരിശീലിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.	I had practiced it with Jessy.
അത് ഇന്നത്തെ എന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ നല്ല കോഫിയായിരുന്നു.	It was my second good coffee today.

"നന്ദി," അയാൾ ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.	"Thank you," he said smiling.
അയാൾ ഒരു മേശയുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് പോയി.	He went to a table.
എന്റെ കൈകൾ അപ്പോഴും ചെറുതായി വിറയ്ക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.	My hands were still shaking a little.

Storyboard: As the morning rush peaks, the pace becomes much too fast for a beginner on the espresso machine. Jessy smoothly takes over the coffee making, while Maya learns to manage the pastry case and the register, counting out change carefully as the queue moves.
രാവിലെ പത്ത് മണി ആയപ്പോൾ കഫേയിൽ നല്ല തിരക്കായി.	By ten o'clock in the morning, the café got really busy.
ഇവിടെ എന്റെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ വലിയ തിരക്കായിരുന്നു അത്.	That was my first big rush here.
ആളുകൾ വരി നിൽക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.	People started standing in line.

ഞാൻ മുന്നൂറ്റിയൻപത് രൂപ അയാൾക്ക് തിരികെ കൊടുത്തു.	I gave him three hundred and fifty rupees back.
ഈ സമയത്ത് ജെസ്സി അയാളുടെ കാപ്പി കൊടുത്തു.	During this time, Jessy gave his coffee.

ജെസ്സിക്കൊപ്പം ഇങ്ങനെ ജോലി ചെയ്യാൻ ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുകയാണ്.	I am learning to work like this with Jessy.

Storyboard: During a short lull before noon, Maya and Jessy share a quick break by the back counter—Jessy with a coffee, and Maya with a cup of local tea, as she prefers to brew her Mexican coffee stash at home. They chat about how the shift has gone, and about the small things Maya has slowly learned to love in Kochi.

"വളരെ നല്ലതാണ്, ജെസ്സി," ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു.	"Very good, Jessy," I said.
"തുടക്കത്തിൽ എനിക്ക് കുറച്ച് തെറ്റുകൾ പറ്റി."	"In the beginning, I made a few mistakes."
"പക്ഷേ, എന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ കാപ്പി ഞാൻ നന്നായി ഉണ്ടാക്കി."	"But, I made my second coffee well."
"അതെ, എസ്പ്രെസ്സോ മെഷീൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ പഠിക്കുക എളുപ്പമല്ല," അവർ പറഞ്ഞു.	"Yes, learning to use the espresso machine is not easy," she said.

"നിങ്ങൾക്ക് കൊച്ചിയിൽ ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടമുള്ള കാര്യം എന്താണ്?"	"What is your favorite thing in Kochi?"
ജെസ്സി ചോദിച്ചു.	Jessy asked.
"എനിക്ക് ഇവിടുത്തെ മഴയും ഭക്ഷണവും വളരെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്," ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു.	"I really like the rain and food here," I said.
"ഞാൻ ഈ നഗരത്തിലെ ജീവിതം ആസ്വദിക്കാൻ പഠിക്കുകയാണ്."	"I am learning to enjoy life in this city."
"നിങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോൾ ശരിക്കും ഒരു കൊച്ചിക്കാരിയായി," ജെസ്സി ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.	"You have truly become a Kochi girl now," Jessy said, smiling.
ഞാൻ ചിരിച്ചു, പക്ഷേ ആ വാക്കുകൾ എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ തങ്ങിനിന്നു.	I laughed, but the words stayed with me.

"ചേച്ചീ, കഫേയിലെ ജോലി എങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു?" സോഫിയ ചോദിക്കുന്നു.	"Chechi, how was the café work?" Sofia asks.
"വളരെ നല്ലൊരു ദിവസമായിരുന്നു, സോഫിയ," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു.	"It was a very good day, Sofia," I say.
ഞാൻ എന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഷിഫ്റ്റിനെക്കുറിച്ച് അവളോട് പറയുന്നു.	I tell her about my first shift.
"ഞാൻ ഇന്ന് കോഫി ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ പഠിച്ചു."	"I learned to make coffee today."
സോഫിയ ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ചോദിക്കുന്നു, "ചേച്ചി തെറ്റുകൾ വരുത്തിയോ?"	Sofia laughs and asks, "Did you make mistakes, Chechi?"
"അതെ, ഞാൻ ഇന്ന് ചില തെറ്റുകൾ വരുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്," ഞാൻ മറുപടി നൽകുന്നു.	"Yes, I have made some mistakes today," I reply.
"പക്ഷേ, ആ തെറ്റുകളിൽ നിന്ന് പുതിയ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യാൻ ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു."	"But I learned to do new things from those mistakes."
"രാവിലെ കഫേയിൽ നല്ല തിരക്കായിരുന്നു."	"It was very busy in the café in the morning."
"എന്റെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ കസ്റ്റമർ ഒരു നല്ല മനുഷ്യനായിരുന്നു."	"My first customer was a friendly man."
"അദ്ദേഹം എന്നോട് ഒരു കാപ്പുച്ചീനോ ഓർഡർ ചെയ്തു."	"He ordered a cappuccino from me."
സോഫിയ കൈയടിക്കുന്നു.	Sofia claps.
"പിന്നെ വേറെ എന്തൊക്കെ ചെയ്തു?" അവൾ ചോദിക്കുന്നു.	"Then what else did you do?" she asks.
"കസ്റ്റമേഴ്സിന്റെ ഓർഡറുകൾ എടുക്കാനും ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു."	"I also learned to take the customers' orders."
"അതൊരു നല്ല അനുഭവമായിരുന്നു."	"It was a good experience."
"എന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഷിഫ്റ്റിനായി അടുത്ത ശനിയാഴ്ചയും അവിടെ പോകാൻ ഞാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്," ഞാൻ പറയുന്നു.	"I have decided to go there next Saturday too for my second shift," I say.
