Week 5: Maya stocks her new kitchen

Storyboard: Maya walks into a brightly lit supermarket in her neighbourhood. She pushes a small shopping cart down the long aisles, carefully selecting a heavy bag of rice and some yellow dal.
मी माझ्या परिसरातील सुपरमार्केटमध्ये जाते.I go to the supermarket in my neighbourhood.
दुकानात खूप उजेड आहे.There is a lot of light in the shop.
मी एक छोटी ट्रॉली घेते.I take a small trolley.

मी ट्रॉली पुढे ढकलते.I push the trolley forward.

Storyboard: Maya looks around for coffee but cannot find the right shelf. She approaches a store worker, addressing him politely as bhaiya, and asks him where the hot drinks are kept.
माझ्या गाडीत तांदूळ आणि डाळ आहे.I have rice and dal in my cart.
आता मला कॉफी हवी आहे.Now I want coffee.
मला कॉफी खूप आवडते.I like coffee a lot.
मी आजूबाजूला पाहते.I look around.
इथे खूप रॅक्स आहेत.There are many racks here.
पण मला कॉफी कुठेही दिसत नाही.But I do not see coffee anywhere.
मला तिथे एक कामगार दिसतो.I see a worker there.
मी त्याच्याकडे जाते.I go to him.
मी त्याला हाक मारते.I call out to him.
"दादा, एक्सक्यूज मी," मी म्हणते."Dada, excuse me," I say.
तो कामगार माझ्याकडे पाहतो.The worker looks at me.
"बोला मॅडम," तो म्हणतो."Yes, madam," he says.
"कॉफी कुठे आहे?" मी विचारते."Where is the coffee?" I ask.
"मला कॉफी पावडर हवी आहे.""I want coffee powder."
"गरम पेये कुठे आहेत?""Where are the hot drinks?"
तो हसतो.He smiles.
"गरम पेये तीन नंबरच्या रांगेत आहेत," तो सांगतो."Hot drinks are in aisle number three," he says.
तो उजवीकडे बोट दाखवतो.He points to the right.
"धन्यवाद, दादा," मी म्हणते."Thank you, Dada," I say.
मी तीन नंबरच्या रांगेत जाते.I go to aisle number three.
street vegetable cart
Storyboard: Leaving the supermarket, Maya stops at a busy street vegetable cart. She tells the vendor she wants a kilo of fresh tomatoes and some spinach, picking out the ones she likes best.
मी सुपरमार्केटच्या बाहेर येते.I come out of the supermarket.
रस्त्यावर एक भाजीची गाडी आहे.There is a vegetable cart on the street.
तिथे खूप गर्दी आहे.It is very crowded there.
मी गाडीजवळ जाते.I go near the cart.

"दादा, मला एक किलो टोमॅटो पाहिजेत.""Dada, I want one kilo of tomatoes."

Storyboard: Maya points to a bumpy, dark green vegetable on the cart that she does not recognize. The vendor explains it is karela, and after hearing it is bitter, Maya decides she does not want it today.
मी माझ्या पिशवीत टोमॅटो आणि पालक ठेवते.I put the tomatoes and spinach in my bag.
मग मी गाडीवरच्या दुसऱ्या भाज्या बघते.Then I look at the other vegetables on the cart.

दादा थोडे हसतात.Dada smiles a little.
ते सांगतात, "मॅडम, हे खूप कडू आहे."He tells me, "Madam, it is very bitter."
"कडू?""Bitter?"
मी विचार करते.I think.
मला कडू जेवण आवडत नाही.I do not like bitter food.
मी दादांना सांगते, "मला आज कारलं नको."I tell Dada, "I do not want karela today."
ते मान हलवतात.He nods.
मी त्यांना भाज्यांचे पैसे देते.I give him the money for the vegetables.
मी माझी पिशवी घेते आणि पुढे जाते.I take my bag and go ahead.
kirana shop spices
Storyboard: Maya visits the small corner kirana shop for her essential cooking supplies. She reads her list to the older shopkeeper across the counter, asking him for turmeric, cumin, and salt.
मी कोपऱ्यावरच्या किराणा दुकानात जाते.I go to the kirana shop on the corner.
दुकान खूप छोटं आहे.The shop is very small.
तिथे एक काका बसले आहेत.An elderly man is sitting there.
मी माझी यादी बघते.I look at my list.
मी काकांना विचारते.I ask the elderly man.
"काका, नमस्कार.""Hello, Kaka."
"नमस्कार मॅडम," काका म्हणतात."Hello Madam," Kaka says.
"तुम्हाला काय हवं आहे?""What do you want?"
"मला हळद हवी आहे," मी सांगते."I want turmeric," I say.
काका मला हळद देतात.Kaka gives me turmeric.
"आणखी काय हवं आहे?" ते विचारतात."What else do you want?" he asks.
"मला जिरं आणि मीठ हवं आहे.""I want cumin and salt."
काका जिरं आणि मीठ काउंटरवर ठेवतात.Kaka puts the cumin and salt on the counter.
मला भारतीय जेवण खूप आवडतं.I like Indian food a lot.
मी त्यांना पुन्हा विचारते.I ask him again.
"काका, मला लाल तिखट पण हवं आहे.""Kaka, I also want red chili powder."
"मॅडम, हे लाल तिखट.""Madam, here is the red chili powder."
"किती रुपये झाले?" मी विचारते."How many rupees is it?" I ask.
"दोनशे साठ रुपये.""Two hundred and sixty rupees."
मी काकांना पैसे देते.I give the money to Kaka.
आता माझ्याकडे सगळे मसाले आहेत.Now I have all the spices.
asha helps out
Storyboard: Maya walks into her building compound carrying three heavy, bulging cloth bags. Her neighbour Asha sees her struggling and quickly steps forward, kindly taking the heaviest bag to help her upstairs.
मी माझ्या इमारतीजवळ येते.I come to my building.
माझ्या हातात तीन मोठ्या कापडी पिशव्या आहेत.I have three big cloth bags in my hands.
त्या पिशव्या खूप भरलेल्या आहेत.Those bags are very full.
त्या खूप जड आहेत.They are very heavy.
मी हळूहळू चालते.I walk slowly.
माझी शेजारीण आशा तिथे आहे.My neighbour Asha is there.
आशा मला पाहते.Asha sees me.
ती लगेच माझ्या जवळ येते.She quickly comes near me.
"माया, तुला मदत हवी आहे का?" ती विचारते."Maya, do you want help?" she asks.

"धन्यवाद, आशा," मी म्हणते."Thank you, Asha," I say.

Storyboard: Maya stands in her kitchen, happily unpacking the groceries onto the counter. She empties the simple plastic packets of spices from the kirana shop into her new stainless steel masala dabba, finally ready to cook her first real dinner.

आता इथली कपाटे रिकामी नाहीत.Now the cupboards here are not empty.
ओट्यावर खूप पिशव्या आहेत.There are many bags on the counter.
