Week 14: Maya navigates the Mumbai metro and BEST bus

Storyboard: Maya waits at her local BEST bus stop on a bright morning. A familiar red bus approaches, and she confidently steps onto it as the doors open, holding the handrail to steady herself.
आज खूप छान सकाळ आहे.	Today is a very nice morning.
मी बस स्टॉपवर उभी आहे.	I am standing at the bus stop.
मी बेस्ट बसची वाट बघते.	I wait for the BEST bus.
रस्त्यावर खूप गाड्या आहेत.	There are many vehicles on the street.
आज मला मेट्रो स्टेशनला जायचं आहे.	Today, I need to get to the metro station.
म्हणून मी बसने प्रवास करते.	So, I travel by bus.
स्टॉपवर इतर लोकही उभे आहेत.	Other people are also standing at the stop.
ते सगळे कामाला जातात.	They are all going to work.
थोड्या वेळाने एक लाल बस जवळ येते.	After a short while, a red bus approaches.
ती माझी बस आहे.	That is my bus.
बस स्टॉपवर थांबते.	The bus stops at the stop.
बसचे दरवाजे उघडतात.	The doors of the bus open.
काही लोक बसमधून खाली उतरतात.	Some people step down from the bus.
मग मी पुढे जाते.	Then I step forward.
मी आत्मविश्वासाने बसमध्ये चढते.	I confidently board the bus.
मी बसचा दांडा घट्ट धरते.	I hold the bus handrail tightly.
आता मी सुरक्षित आहे.	Now I am secure.
बस पुन्हा सुरू होते.	The bus starts again.

Storyboard: Maya finds a seat and signals the bus conductor. She tells him that she needs to get to the main metro station, hands him a few rupees, and pockets her small paper ticket.
मी बसमध्ये आहे.	I am in the bus.
मला एक जागा मिळते.	I find a seat.
मी तिथे बसते.	I sit there.
मी कंडक्टरला पाहते.	I see the conductor.
मी त्यांना खूण करते.	I signal him.
ते माझ्या जवळ येतात.	He comes near me.
"दादा, मला एक तिकीट द्या," मी म्हणते.	"Dada, give me one ticket," I say.
"तुम्हाला कुठे जायचं आहे?" ते विचारतात.	"Where do you need to go?" he asks.
"मला मुख्य मेट्रो स्टेशनला जायचं आहे," मी सांगते.	"I need to get to the main metro station," I say.
"मला तिथे उतरायचं आहे."	"I need to alight there."
"मॅडम, तिकीट वीस रुपये आहे," ते म्हणतात.	"Madam, the ticket is twenty rupees," he says.
मी माझ्या बॅगमधून पैसे काढते.	I take out money from my bag.
माझ्याकडे सुट्टे पैसे आहेत.	I have change.
मी त्यांना वीस रुपये देते.	I give him twenty rupees.
ते मशीनमधून एक कागदी तिकीट काढतात.	He prints a paper ticket from the machine.
"हे घ्या तुमचे तिकीट," ते म्हणतात.	"Here is your ticket," he says.
मी ते लहान तिकीट घेते.	I take that small ticket.
मी ते तिकीट माझ्या खिशात ठेवते.	I put that ticket in my pocket.
आता मी आरामात बसते.	Now I sit comfortably.
बसने प्रवास करणे खूप सोपे आहे.	Travelling by bus is very easy.

Storyboard: The bus navigates through the bustling Mumbai traffic. Upon reaching the large glass-fronted metro station, Maya carefully steps off the bus and joins the crowd walking toward the entrance.
बस मुंबईच्या ट्रॅफिकमधून जाते.	The bus goes through Mumbai's traffic.
रस्त्यावर खूप वाहने आहेत.	There are many vehicles on the road.
मी खिडकीबाहेर बघते.	I look out the window.
थोड्या वेळाने बस थांबते.	After a while, the bus stops.
समोर एक मोठे स्टेशन आहे.	There is a big station in front.
ते मेट्रो स्टेशन आहे.	It is a metro station.
स्टेशनला काचेचे मोठे दरवाजे आहेत.	The station has big glass doors.
मी बसमधून खाली उतरते.	I step down from the bus.
मी काळजीपूर्वक उतरते.	I get off carefully.
बाहेर खूप मोठी गर्दी आहे.	There is a very big crowd outside.
सर्व लोक स्टेशनकडे चालत आहेत.	All the people are walking towards the station.
मी पण त्या गर्दीत चालते.	I also walk in that crowd.
मला आज मेट्रोने जायचं आहे.	I need to go by metro today.
मला स्टेशनच्या आत जायचं आहे.	I need to go inside the station.
प्रवेशद्वार खूप जवळ आहे.	The entrance is very near.
मी वेगात चालते.	I walk fast.
मी स्टेशनमध्ये प्रवेश करते.	I enter the station.

Storyboard: Inside the spacious station, Maya approaches the ticket counter. She politely addresses the worker as sir, explains that she needs to get to a specific station near the sea, and purchases a permanent metro card for her journey.
मी मोठ्या मेट्रो स्टेशनच्या आत जाते.	I go inside the large metro station.
हे स्टेशन खूप प्रशस्त आहे.	This station is very spacious.
मी तिकीट काउंटरकडे जाते.	I go towards the ticket counter.
तिथे एक कर्मचारी बसले आहेत.	A worker is sitting there.
मी त्यांना म्हणते, "नमस्कार साहेब."	I say to him, "Hello, sir."
ते म्हणतात, "नमस्कार मॅडम, बोला."	He says, "Hello, madam, tell me."
मी सांगते, "मला समुद्राजवळच्या स्टेशनला जायचं आहे."	I say, "I need to get to the station near the sea."
"मला आता रोज मेट्रोने प्रवास करायचा आहे."	"I want to travel by metro every day now."
"म्हणून मला एक पर्मनंट मेट्रो कार्ड हवं आहे."	"So I want a permanent metro card."
ते म्हणतात, "हो, नक्की मिळेल."	He says, "Yes, you will definitely get it."
"कार्डचे शंभर रुपये आणि प्रवासाचे शंभर रुपये."	"One hundred rupees for the card and one hundred rupees for the journey."
"असे एकूण दोनशे रुपये लागतात."	"So it takes two hundred rupees in total."
मी माझ्या पर्समधून पैसे काढते.	I take money out of my purse.
मी त्यांना दोनशे रुपये देते.	I give him two hundred rupees.
ते मला एक नवीन मेट्रो कार्ड देतात.	He gives me a new metro card.
मी कार्ड घेते.	I take the card.
मी त्यांना म्हणते, "धन्यवाद साहेब."	I say to him, "Thank you, sir."

आता मला प्लॅटफॉर्मवर जायचं आहे.	Now I need to get to the platform.
आणि मला मेट्रो ट्रेनमध्ये चढायचं आहे.	And I need to board the metro train.

Storyboard: Maya rides the escalator up to the platform, tapping her new metro card at the gates, and stands behind the yellow safety line. A sleek train glides in, the doors slide open, and she boards the cool, air-conditioned metro carriage.
माझ्याकडे आता नवीन मेट्रो कार्ड आहे.	I now have a new metro card.
मला या मेट्रोने जायचं आहे.	I need to travel by this metro.
मी गेटजवळ जाते.	I go near the gate.
मी मशीनवर कार्ड टॅप करते.	I tap the card on the machine.
काचेचे दरवाजे उघडतात.	The glass doors open.
मी आत जाते.	I go inside.
समोर सरकता जिना आहे.	There is an escalator ahead.
मी सरकत्या जिन्याने वर जाते.	I go up by the escalator.
मी प्लॅटफॉर्मवर पोहोचते.	I reach the platform.
तिथे जमिनीवर एक पिवळी रेषा आहे.	There is a yellow line on the floor there.
मी पिवळ्या रेषेच्या मागे उभी राहते.	I stand behind the yellow line.
थोड्या वेळाने एक आधुनिक ट्रेन येते.	After a short while, a sleek train arrives.
ट्रेन प्लॅटफॉर्मवर थांबते.	The train stops at the platform.
ट्रेनचे दरवाजे आपोआप उघडतात.	The train's doors open automatically.
आधी काही प्रवासी ट्रेनमधून खाली उतरतात.	First, some passengers alight from the train.
मग मी ट्रेनमध्ये चढते.	Then I board the train.

आत खूप थंड वाटते.	It feels very cool inside.

asking for directions
Storyboard: Looking at the route map above the door, Maya feels unsure about where the lines connect. She politely addresses an older fellow passenger as aunty and asks her at which station she needs to get off to change lines.
मी मेट्रोमध्ये उभी आहे.	I am standing in the metro.
ट्रेन खूप स्वच्छ आणि थंड आहे.	The train is very clean and cool.
मी दरवाज्याच्या वरचा नकाशा पाहते.	I look at the map above the door.
नकाशामध्ये खूप लाईन आहेत.	There are many lines on the map.
मला समुद्राजवळ जायचं आहे.	I need to get near the sea.
पण ही ट्रेन तिथे थेट जात नाही.	But this train does not go there directly.
मला ट्रेन बदलायची आहे.	I need to change the train.
मला नकाशा समजत नाही.	I do not understand the map.
एक वयस्कर महिला माझ्या जवळ बसली आहे.	An older woman is sitting near me.
मी नम्रपणे त्यांच्याशी बोलते.	I politely speak to her.
"क्षमा करा मावशी," मी म्हणते.	"Excuse me, aunty," I say.
त्या हसून माझ्याकडे पाहतात.	She looks at me with a smile.
"मला समुद्राजवळ जायचं आहे," मी म्हणते.	"I need to get near the sea," I say.
"मी कोणत्या स्टेशनवर उतरू?"	"At which station should I alight?"
मावशी नकाशा पाहतात.	Aunty looks at the map.
"तुम्हाला पुढच्या जंक्शनवर उतरायचं आहे," त्या म्हणतात.	"You need to alight at the next junction," she says.
"तिथून निळ्या लाईनच्या ट्रेनने जा," त्या मला सांगतात.	"From there, go by the blue line train," she tells me.
मला आता मार्ग समजतो.	I understand the route now.
"धन्यवाद मावशी," मी आनंदाने म्हणते.	"Thank you, aunty," I happily say.
changing metro lines
Storyboard: Following the passenger's helpful instructions, Maya alights at a busy junction station. She follows the colored signs overhead, walks down a corridor to a new platform, and successfully boards her connecting train.
माझी ट्रेन मोठ्या जंक्शन स्टेशनवर पोहोचते.	My train reaches the big junction station.
मला त्या मावशींच्या सूचना आठवतात.	I remember that aunty's instructions.
ट्रेनचे दरवाजे उघडतात.	The train's doors open.
मी ट्रेनमधून खाली उतरते.	I alight from the train.
हे स्टेशन खूप मोठे आहे.	This station is very big.
इथे खूप गर्दी आहे.	There is a lot of crowd here.
मला दुसऱ्या प्लॅटफॉर्मवर जायचं आहे.	I need to get to the other platform.

मला निळा बोर्ड दिसतो.	I see the blue sign.

मी एका लांब कॉरिडॉरमधून चालते.	I walk through a long corridor.
लोक भरभर चालत आहेत.	People are walking fast.
मी नवीन प्लॅटफॉर्मवर पोहोचते.	I reach the new platform.
मी पिवळ्या रेषेच्या मागे थांबते.	I wait behind the yellow line.
काही मिनिटांतच नवीन ट्रेन येते.	In a few minutes, the new train arrives.

आता मी योग्य मार्गावर आहे.	Now I am on the right route.
arriving near the sea
Storyboard: The final train arrives at her destination. Maya steps off the carriage, rides the escalator down to the street level, and instantly feels the humid, salty breeze coming from the nearby sea.
मी माझ्या स्टेशनवर मेट्रोने पोहोचते.	I arrive at my station by metro.
ट्रेनचे दरवाजे उघडतात.	The train doors open.
मी ट्रेनमधून खाली उतरते.	I step off the train.
मी स्टेशनवर इकडे-तिकडे बघते.	I look around the station.
इथे प्लॅटफॉर्मवर खूप गर्दी आहे.	It is very crowded here on the platform.
मी बाहेर जाण्याचा रस्ता शोधते.	I look for the way out.
मी सरकत्या जिन्याकडे जाते.	I go towards the escalator.
मी सरकत्या जिन्यावरून खाली येते.	I come down on the escalator.
आता मी रस्त्यावर येते.	Now I come onto the street.
मला समुद्राजवळ जायचं आहे.	I need to go near the sea.
माझं काम तिथेच आहे.	My errand is right there.
इथे बाहेर छान हवा आहे.	There is a nice breeze outside here.
ही हवा थोडी दमट आणि खारट आहे.	This breeze is a little humid and salty.
मला समुद्राचा वास येतो.	I can smell the sea.
समुद्र इथून अगदी जवळ आहे.	The sea is right nearby from here.
मी समुद्राकडे चालते.	I walk towards the sea.
मला खूप छान वाटतं.	I feel very nice.
running the errand
Storyboard: Maya walks down a narrow lane near the promenade and enters an old local sweets shop to complete her errand. She politely asks the shop worker, calling him bhaiya, to pack a box of fresh Maharashtrian pedhas to share at the office, pays in rupees, and happily concludes her cross-city journey.
मी आता समुद्राजवळ आहे.	I am near the sea now.
मी समुद्राजवळच्या एका छोट्या गल्लीत चालते.	I walk in a small lane near the sea.
इथे मिठाईचे एक जुने दुकान आहे.	There is an old sweets shop here.
मी दुकानात जाते.	I go into the shop.
दुकानात खूप छान वास येतो.	The shop smells very nice.
मला काचेच्या पेटीत ताजे पेढे दिसतात.	I see fresh pedhas in a glass box.
हे खास महाराष्ट्रीय पेढे आहेत.	These are special Maharashtrian pedhas.
हे पेढे मला खूप आवडतात.	I like these pedhas a lot.
मला हे पेढे घरी न्यायचे आहेत.	I want to take these pedhas home.
मी दुकानातल्या माणसाला बोलावते.	I call the man in the shop.
"दादा, कृपया मला एक बॉक्स द्या," मी म्हणते.	"Dada, please give me one box," I say.
ते माझ्यासाठी एक छान बॉक्स पॅक करतात.	He packs a nice box for me.
"याचे किती पैसे झाले?" मी त्यांना विचारते.	"How much is this?" I ask him.
"तीनशे रुपये, मॅडम," ते म्हणतात.	"Three hundred rupees, madam," he says.
मी त्यांना तीनशे रुपये देते.	I give him three hundred rupees.
ते मला पेढ्यांचा बॉक्स देतात.	He gives me the box of pedhas.
माझे काम आता पूर्ण होते.	My work is now complete.
मी आज बसने आणि मेट्रोने मोठा प्रवास करते.	Today I make a long journey by bus and by metro.
पण आता मी खूप खुश आहे.	But now I am very happy.
आता, मला पुन्हा घरी जायचं आहे.	Now, I need to go back home.
